Marjorie Robinson closing hours
The new closing time of 5 PM is extremely early. It means we won't be able to study or revise after a full day of lectures anymore. During busy periods such as exam season, the reduced hours will cause even more people to try and use the other libraries and study spaces, which are already extremely busy as is. It should be either reverted back to what it was in previous years, or changed to stay open to at least 10 PM.

Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding the changes to the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms opening hours. Due to University-wide budget constraints, we have been required to review staffing levels and how we deliver services across our different library sites. As part of this process, we carefully considered opening hours across all our library sites, using rich occupancy data and student feedback to guide our approach. Our analysis showed that in comparison to the Philip Robinson Library, evening usage at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms is significantly lower. In light of this, and to ensure we continue to provide high-quality services where they are most needed, we will be focusing on staffing resources at the Philip Robinson and Walton libraries, and we have taken the difficult decision to reduce opening hours at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms.

These changes do mean we can continue to offer term-time 24/7 opening at the nearby Philip Robinson Library, which occupancy data demonstrates has more than enough capacity to accommodate current demand for Library study spaces after 5pm. In addition, the Walton Library is open until later in the evening, and the Old Library Building and the Students Union both provide 24/7 access.

I understand that you value the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms and the space it provides, and I can assure you the decision to reduce the opening hours was not made lightly.

Best regards,
