Marjorie New Hours
I was upset to read that the library hours for the Marjorie are being reduced to 5pm. As a 5th year medical student I have always really enjoyed studying in this library and the 2nd floor has always been really good. One of the main reasons for this was because of the noise level and the fact that while it gets busy it at times it is often quieter and more relaxed in the evenings and weekends. As a student who is on placement 9-5 I was looking forward to studying in the Marjorie Robinson on my way back home after university and on weekend evenings. I was really disappointed to read that this would no longer be possible especially in the run up to finals in January. After studying in this library for the past 4 years I am disappointed that it will no longer be available as the Phillip Robinson is often much busier and a less social environment( the bottom floor is often full) and there are not many other out of hours study spots on campus where you can work with friends. I understand that reopening to midnight may not be possible but until 9/10pm would really make a difference. I know this is an opinion which is shared amount several other students. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding the Marjorie Robinson Library opening hours. Due to University-wide budget constraints, we have been required to review staffing levels and how we deliver services across our different library sites. As part of this process, we carefully considered opening hours across all our library sites, using rich occupancy data and student feedback to guide our approach. Our analysis showed that in comparison to the Philip Robinson Library, evening usage at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms is significantly lower. In light of this, and to ensure we continue to provide high-quality services where they are most needed, we will be focusing on staffing resources at the Philip Robinson and Walton libraries, and we have taken the difficult decision to reduce opening hours at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms.

I understand that you value the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms and the space it provides, and that the reduction in hours may be disappointing to you and other students, but I can assure you the decision to reduce the opening hours was not made lightly. As an alternative, you may consider Level 2 of the Philip Robinson Library which offers a quieter social learning space and may suit your needs, or alternatively Walton Library is open until 10pm each evening which again offers a social learning space where you can study with friends.

Best regards,
