Smartcard
When printing out new access cards to be posted out to ICFL, is it possible that the new card is activated on receipt by the cardholder rather than at printing to (a) improve security and (b) save people having to trek to the library or have no access when new card in post.

(the people are really helpful in the library but can't change the system!).

Thanks

Library Response

Thank you for your comment.  Whilst I can understand that coming to Walton or waiting until the smartcard reaches you may be problematic, it is something that NUIT cannot change.  In order to produce the smartcards in the correct way, the chip needs to be read by Symmetry as the vast majority of its digits are invisible (60+).  Once the card is scanned on the reader and the record saved is the only time when the chip measure we put in place as ICFL and CAV are the only exceptions when it comes to posting out smartcards, as it is university policy that cards must be collected by the individual.  I know this is not ideal but I hope you understand why we do it this way.

Kind regards

Carol
