Excusion from the Philip Robinson Library
Me and my coursemate have attempted to go to the philip robinson library in order to use the computers provided by the university to complete our assignment due on Monday. We were turned away on the basis that students arent allowed in after a night out, which we have not been on. We felt discriminated against for something we had not done and for which there was no evidence. We were told that because we did not have backpacks it was not convincing that we were there for studying when all we wanted was to use the computers. This argument was clearly flawed as we had walked directly from our homes in Jesmond and don't need backpacks to use the computers. This library policy seems to us to be weak and inconsistent. It has caused us an undue amount of stress and anxiety and perhaps should be reevaluated. Our assignments have been impacted by this.

Library Response

We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students wishing to study late at night.   I'm sure you can appreciate that this can be challenging for colleagues to manage as they frequently have to deal with disruptive behaviour.

I understand that this may not have been the case, but, colleagues were sufficiently concerned by your presentation to the Library to query your reasons for access.    I have spoken to the colleagues involved and they said that a more senior staff member was requested to talk to you about entry but that you declined to wait.

I hope that you do not experience similar issues in the future but we will continue to be cautious about Library access at night.   If you wish to discuss this further I am happy to meet up with you.  Please, let me know.
