If you requested a 'long loan' book, it will normally be issued for 4 weeks. Sometimes, however, when a particular book is in high demand a queue of requests can build up.

In these circumstances, to ensure as wide a circulation as possible, each library user in the request queue will be issued the book for a truncated loan period until there is no longer a queue.

Of course, once you have returned the book you will be able to rejoin the request queue by requesting it again for yourself.
