It is a barcode which is unique to that particular physical item - normally a particular copy of a book -  assigned when the item is first received by the library.

The barcode will normally be on the FRONT cover of the book (not to be confused with the retail barcode on the back cover) and will have a number (e.g. M12025005957) printed underneath. It is this barcode that you will scan when you borrow or return the item.
