If you have just graduated from Newcastle University, your smartcard will allow you access to library buildings up until the expiry date shown on the front of your card. However, you will not be able to borrow books.

If you wish to continue using the Library after you have graduated you can join as an alumni member. Membership is free for reference access, and £20 per year if you wish to borrow books.

If you'd like to join the library as a borrowing or reference alumni member please visit the Service Desk with proof of graduation so that we can issue you with the appropriate smartcard.

  1. After transitioning from a student to an alumni library membership, do I retain the same access to electronic resources (journals etc)? While I am a student, these can be accessed online using my smart card, but what about as an alumni?

  2. Unfortunately you don’t retain the same access to e-resources when you become an Alumni as the majority of our resources are accessible only to registered students and members of staff due to publishers restrictions. However, there are many freely available e-resources which anyone can use and these are searchable via Library Search. If you know the title of the journal you’re looking for, you just need to type it into Library Search as normal and it will tell you whether it is freely available when you click on view online where you can access it directly.
