Marjorie Robinson Opening times
I would like to express my concern regarding the reduced opening hours of the Marjorie Robinson Study Rooms this year. As a final-year medical student at Newcastle University, I have found it very challenging to maintain my usual study routine without the Marjorie being open late or on weekends, as it was previously.
Throughout my time at university, the Marjorie Robinson has always been my go-to study space. Its bright, open environment with large windows, plentiful seating, and dedicated work-focused atmosphere make it uniquely suited to long, productive study sessions—particularly important for medical students balancing final-year placements and revision. Unlike library spaces such as the Philip Robinson or Walton libraries, the Marjorie offers a calmer, more modern study environment that many of my peers and I prefer for focused work.
Additionally, the Marjorie’s central location and proximity to metro and bus routes make it a much safer and more convenient option, especially during the darker winter months. The Walton Library, while valuable, is less accessible and requires crossing the Town Moor, which can be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe at night.
For many medical students, evenings and weekends are often the only available times to study due to demanding clinical schedules. Having the Marjorie Robinson open later—as it was in previous years—would greatly support our ability to revise effectively and maintain a safe, supportive study environment.
I hope the university will consider reinstating the extended opening hours for the Marjorie Robinson Study Rooms, at least during key academic periods such as exam seasons or the lead-up to finals when all libraries will be loud and cramped.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration!

Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms opening hours. In response to university-wide budgetary constraints, the library has undertaken a detailed review of staffing levels and service delivery. As part of this process, we carefully considered opening hours across all our library sites, using rich occupancy data and student feedback to guide our approach. Our analysis clearly showed that students consistently value and make extensive use of Philip Robinson Library particularly during evenings and weekends. In contrast, usage of the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms is significantly lower in the evenings.

In light of this, and to ensure we continue to provide high-quality services where they are most needed, we are focusing on staffing resources at the Philip Robinson and Walton libraries, and we have taken the difficult decision to reduce opening hours at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms. These changes do mean we can continue to offer term-time 24/7 opening at the nearby Philip Robinson Library, which occupancy data demonstrates has more than enough capacity to accommodate current demand for Library study spaces after 5pm. If you have any concerns regarding walking around campus in the evenings, especially at this time of the year, I would encourage you to download the SafeZone App which will connect you to Security colleagues who will be able to respond. Here is a link to more information about campus security and how you can download the App: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/study/campus/student-safety/

I understand that you value the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms and the space it provides, and I can assure you the decision to reduce the opening hours was not made lightly.

Best regards,

Susan Willcox,

Assistant Librarian, Customer Services
