the working hours are not suitable since many lectures finish at 5 and the library is closed. The exam season is also very busy and marjorie closing at 5pm is very stressful

Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding the change to the Marjorie Robinson Library opening hours. Due to University-wide budget constraints, we have been required to review staffing levels and how we deliver services across our different library sites. As part of this process, we carefully considered opening hours across all our library sites, using rich occupancy data and student feedback to guide our approach. Analysis of detailed usage data and student feedback demonstrates that that Philip Robinson Library is consistently the most used and valued, especially during evenings and weekends, and we have found that the library has never reached full capacity. In contrast, evening usage at Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms is significantly lower. So, to make the best use of our resources, we’re focusing staffing at our busiest sites and adjusting opening hours elsewhere.

These changes do mean we can continue to offer term-time 24/7 opening at the nearby Philip Robinson Library, which occupancy data demonstrates has more than enough capacity to accommodate current demand for Library study spaces after 5pm. In addition, the Walton Library is open until later in the evening, and the Old Library Building and the Students Union both provide 24/7 access for those wishing to study later, especially during exam season.

I understand that you value the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms and the space it provides, and I can assure you the decision to reduce the opening hours was not made lightly.

Best regards,

Susan Willcox,

Assistant Librarian, Customer Services
