From Tuesday 19th May 2026, Adobe Digital Editions will no longer be available for downloading full EBSCOHost e-books. Instead, users downloading full e-books to a personal device will need to install Thorium Reader. If you are using a cluster PC, Thorium Reader should already be installed.
This is only for downloading full e-books, and downloading chapters or reading books online will be unaffected.
Thorium Reader is a free app that can be downloaded here.
EBSCO are switching to Thorium Reader as it is compatible with screen readers and adheres to modern accessibility standards. Once Thorium Reader is installed:
-
Locate the e-book you would like to download in EBSCOHost.
-
Click the download button and ‘Full eBook’ tab before selecting your download length and format.
-
Copy the Thorium Reader passphrase you are provided and click download.
-
Open the download in Thorium Reader and enter the passphrase copied. You will only need to enter your passphrase once on each device that you use.
A demonstration of the new workflow and FAQs are available via EBSCOHost here:
