Introduction

The Newcastle University repository is designed to accept research data that have value for the future, and are intended for open sharing and reuse. The datasets that you upload should either be suitable for reanalysis as standalone outputs, or underpin your research, by enhancing understanding of corresponding publications, manuscripts or related research, or validating your work.

You can find general information on our 'Sharing' page. If you encounter issues, let us know and we will try to guide you through the process.

You should be able to use single sign-on by clicking the 'Login' button at the top-right corner of https://data.ncl.ac.uk/ as shown below.

Instructions

When you are successfully signed in, you should see your initials or profile picture at the top-right.

Click the ‘Upload’ button and in the NUCoRE menu displayed in the image below, please select ‘Newcastle University’. The NUCoRE structure of the repository is not something that has been used and will be replaced by a more useful structure.

On the same screen, you will also need to select the most suitable item type for you, such as 'dataset', or 'software'. You should also upload items at this stage, but you can continue without uploading and proceed to filling the metadata fields first, while you and other colleagues are still working on the files.

If you are uploading multiple files to the record, we recommend that you provide a ‘Readme’ file containing a glossary of file names, making navigating the dataset easier. The file should also contain study-level information. Our ‘Readme’ template is attached and you can amend it to make it suit the nature of your research.

After you upload your files, we recommend that you add rich metadata which will make your datasets discoverable and reusable. Once you are happy with the files and metadata, you can submit the record for us to review it. If you must submit your dataset in support of a funding application, or manuscript submission, please allocate sufficient time for us to review the data and ask you follow-up questions.

If you have data from human participants, we will ask you to complete our data review form. We also recommend that you deposit participant information sheets and blank consent forms for enhanced transparency.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us directly at rdm@ncl.ac.uk.
