There are a number of ways in which locally based barristers, solicitors and paralegals can access the Philip Robinson Library: 

The most popular way is through joining the library, this will give you a community smartcard, enable you to borrow and request 8 books at any time as well as consult our wide range of print resources.  Here are the three membership options available: 

  • Community Affiliate membership (FREE for 1 year)
    • available for members of professional and learned institutions in the North East, which accredit courses at Newcastle University.  Newcastle University works with the Bar Standards Board and the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) so if you are a full member (not a student member) of either organisation, please bring your membership proof and photo ID to the Philip Robinson Library during Library Help Desk opening hours.
  • Community Alumni membership (£20 for 1 year)
    • available for graduates of Newcastle University and King's College Durham, please complete the Alumni membership form online at: https://bit.ly/AlumniNclLib (where there is also the option of choosing FREE reference membership if you do not wish to borrow)
  • Community Individual membership (£50 for 1 year)

Reference Access applications: Consultation membership is reference only and is applied for online, please complete the online application form: https://bit.ly/ConsultationNclLib ensuring to mention your legal professional status and need access to law resources. 

Visitor Passes: unless your visit is part of an open day or open event, individual walk-in visitors' to the Philip Robinson Library must pre-arranged a visitors pass by contact us via Library Help or calling the Philip Robinson Library on (0191) 2087662. .

 

Please note:  that in accordance with publishers' licences, access to most electronic resources are restricted to current Newcastle University Staff and Students. Community and Consultation smartcards are for access to the University library during desk services opening hours only, they do not open night doors on campus or give overnight library access
