Access for staff and students from other UK and Irish institutions is only through the SCONUL Access scheme. SCONUL Access is a national reciprocal scheme which allows many university library users to access other academic libraries in the UK (please note that not all university libraries are members of the scheme).

Please see the attached FAQ for details on how to join or access Newcastle University via SCONUL (it is important this is set up before your first visit to Newcastle).

There are, however, two exceptions to this:

Local Reciprocal Scheme

Staff and students of Northumbria and Durham universities have reference access throughout the year at the Newcastle University Library during Service Desk opening hours on production of a valid campus ID card or library card.

Summer Vacation (19th June - 18th September 2022)

Students from all UK or Irish Universities can have reference access to the Philip Robinson Library on production of a valid campus ID or Library Card during Service Desk opening hours

Admission during Self Service Hours is available to Newcastle University Staff or Student smartcard holders only.  Community or Consultation smartcards are for access to the University library during core desk services opening hours, they do not open night doors on campus or give out of hours library access.

There is currently no reciprocal agreement in place for Students from International Universities (excluding Ireland) please refer to Occasional Visitors
