Newcastle University Library supports the teaching and learning of the University in the first instance, however reference facilities are offered to sixth form schools and sixth form colleges in the North East of England through the work of our Education Outreach Team.  A level students can access the library's wide range of information resources as well as use the library's study spaces during Desk Services opening hours.

Sixth form membership card holders can ONLY use the University library during core desk services opening hours.  Due to security arrangements, evening and weekend access to the Walton Library, based inside the medical school, is not possible.

Membership of Newcastle University Library is not automatic and must be applied for.  All library members are expected to adhere to specific behavioural standards (which are listed in the Library rules and regulations: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/rules-and-regulations) failure to do so by sixth form members will result in the removal of an individual's access and your school being informed of the incident.

Library access is not available for sixth form members at any University Library site during the University exam and revision periods or self service hours (which includes University closure days) please see specific dates below.

  • December 24th - January 20th, 2026 (Winter break, winter revision and exams);
  • April 5th, 2026 (Easter Sunday)
  • April 20th-May 29th, 2026 (Summer revision and exams).

How to apply:
