Newcastle University Library supports the teaching and learning of the University in the first instance, however reference facilities are offered to sixth form schools and sixth form colleges in the North East of England through the work of our Education Outreach Team.  A level students can access the library's wide range of information resources as well as use the library's study spaces during Desk Services opening hours.

Sixth form membership smartcards are for access to the University library during core desk services opening hours, they do not open night doors on campus or give out of hours library access

Please be aware that due to security arrangements, evening and weekend access to the Walton Library, based inside the medical school, is not possible.  Library rules and regulations are available here: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/rules-and-regulations failure to adhere to them could result in the removal of an individual's access.

Library access is not available for sixth form members at any University Library site during the University exam and revision periods or self service hours (which includes Bank Holidays and University closure days).

Revision and exam dates for academic year 2024/2025 are; January 4th-17th and April 28th-May 30th.                                     Self Service and Closure Dates are; December 21st - January 4th and April 20th.

How to apply:

Print out and complete the attached application form. Printed application forms must be verified and signed by a teacher or school librarian. The membership form must be individually signed by a teacher or librarian, photocopied signatures will not be accepted. Please bring the completed form to the Philip Robinson Library along with one of the following forms of ID:

  • school badge & lanyard
  • school journal/homework planner

Applications will not be processed without a completed and verified application form accompanied by appropriate ID.  Please do not attend the library in the first instance without these.

Any schools without lanyards or planners must contact the University library in advance of pupil application to organise another appropriate form of identification and verification.

Once you have been accepted for membership, you must look after your library card as you would a credit card, it is yours and for your individual use only.  The University Library operates a strict no card no entry policy photographs or screencaps are not acceptable.  Lost sixth form access cards will be replaced ONLY on production of valid school ID (see above)
