This issue is experienced by some EndNote users who have downloaded and installed the software to their own personal computer or MAC and occurs when clicking 'Insert Citation' in Word and searching for a reference.

 

The images below show an example of the 'login window' which appears with this issue, as well as the 'error message' indicating that Cite While You Write could not connect to the EndNote online server.

Next to the Insert Citation button you may see that Word currently links to Endnote Online, where you would normally use account details. However, the Desktop version of Endnote does not require you to log in.

You need to change the Word settings so that it looks for Endnote Desktop

In the Endnote tab, click on 'Preferences'.

In the box that appears (as shown in the image below) select the Application tab and in the drop-down menu select 'EndNote', rather than 'EndNote online'.
