Our historic local newspaper holdings are as follows:

Microfilm

On microfilm, we have Unit 6, series 4 of the '18th Century Provincial Newspapers' collection. This contains:

  • The Newcastle gazette or Northern Courant, 1710-1712
  • The Newcastle Courant 1711-1800
  • The Newcastle Weekly Mercury, 1722-1723
The North Country Journal or the Impartial intelligencer, 1734-1738

The microfilms are on public access in our media room (room 436) on floor 4 of the Philip Robinson Library. This collection is in filing cabinet #10 (the cabinets are in a small room at the back of room 436). There are 2 microform readers in the room, and you can download from them to a USB drive.  One reader is accessible with a university login and the other is accessible without.  You need to book a microform reader to use one  via the study spaces booking system.
