If an EndNote library becomes damaged, you may get an error message when trying to open it or work with the references.
There's a few things you can do to try to recover your library:
1. Check if the EndNote Library (.enl) and data folder (.data) have become separated. To work correctly your Endnote library needs both of these items to be saved together in the same folder and to have the same name. Try to find the two folders and reunite them.
2. If your EndNote Library and data folder are saved on the H drive, it may be possible to recover a previous version. To do this:
- Open the top folder location where the EndNote Library is saved e.g. Documents
- Right click on the folder where your library is saved and click on Properties > previous versions
- NUIT backup the H: drive every 2 hours, so you should see 2-3 weeks worth of previous versions of the folder. Select a date when you are confident that you library was last working properly.
- Click on the appropriate folder and select 'Restore'. If your Library and .data folder are stored in a top level folder, complete this process at file level rather than folder.
- Close EndNote. Double click on the newly restored .enl file and the Library should open
3. Follow instructions for recovering your EndNote Library files on the EndNote website linked to below.
4. If you have synced your Library with EndNote online, you can create a new blank library and synchronize by clicking Tools > Sync.
If none of these steps help, Clarivate's EndNote Support team may be able to recover the Library for you.
