What can the Academic Skills Team help me with?

Answer

Academic writing is one of the most common issues we offer guidance on, as it’s usually the focus of assessment. We can help with not only the final product (authorial voice and academic style), but also the whole process of writing, from analysing the question, planning and structuring, building an argument to pulling a draft together and editing it. We can help you with:

  • Academic and research Skills - critical thinking, revision and exam technique, reading and note-taking, planning and structuring your work
  • Assessment and feedback- understanding your assignment brief, interpreting essay questions, marking criteria and expectations, using feedback to improve
  • Academic Writing - academic language and style , finding your voice, the writing process from first draft to final edit

As well as writing, we can help you with a range of study skills such as preparing for exams and revision, time management, avoiding plagiarism, critical reading or note-taking.

We cannot advise you on subject specific queries or research methodologies, instead we work with you to help you to develop the skills required in your context.

If you have any questions about what we can help you with, booking an appointment or appointment availability, email us at academicskills@newcastle.ac.uk.
