Scifinder-n is a powerful, chemist-curated database from CAS offering reference, substance and reaction searching with sophisticated analysis tools. Substances can be searched by chemical structure, markush (for Patents), molecular formula, property or substance identifier.

All alternative substance names are listed alongside CAS Registry numbers and commercial sources.

In the latest SciFinder-n interface, the database is much easier to search, with tools including MethodsNow (showing every experimental step for ease of replication in the lab) and PatentPak (enabling you to get straight to the novel chemistry information in a Patent document).

Popular in industry, this database is vital for students and researchers in chemistry, pharmacy, forensic science, medicinal chemistry, chemical engineering and biotechnology.

To use SciFinder-n you must register with the database and create your own unique SciFinder-n username and password (NOT the same as your Newcastle University campus ID).

To do this on campus, find SciFinder-n in Library Search and in the note below the blue bubble button, click on the Registration is required URL to open the registration form. Fill it out as prompted using your Newcastle University email address and you will be sent an email from cas.org to complete the registration process.

To do this off campus, you cannot use the form URL above as it only works within our IP address. Instead, to register for the first time, please email SciFinder from your Newcastle University email address and ask to be registered remotely. Follow the prompts in the email you receive to complete the registration process.

Once registered and logged in successfully, you can connect to the database any time after that on and off campus by going to scifinder-n.cas.org or by clicking on the blue button in the Library Search record and logging in with your registered SciFinder details.

You can now set personal preferences, explore resources, and save your own searches. You can also browse your search history and set up alerts and notifications.
